Q & A with the Cast of Bubble Guppies Live!
The Bubble Guppies are coming to Toronto on April 29! Featuring rockin' music, comedic high jinks, and audience participation, the Bubble Guppies will leave no stone unturned and no bubble left un-popped in order to get the show on the road. Including a wave of playful characters, energetic song and dance and theatrical magic, Nickelodeon’s Bubble Guppies Live! Ready to Rock will have kids, parents and grandparents singing and dancing along with this rockin’ interactive show.
We recently caught up with 2 members of the cast Grace Newson who plays Molly and Brittany Hunter who plays Gil, to find out a little more about the show and what it's like to be a part of it!
1) What role/character do you play in Bubble Guppies Live! and tell us what it’s like?
Brittany Hunter: In Koba Entertainment’s production of Bubble Guppies Live! Ready to Rock I play the role of Gil. Gil is the silly, playful co-host of the show. If he sees a ball, he has to throw it; if he finds an electric guitar, he has to play it; if there’s a dog costume around, he’ll be barking in no time. He wants EVERYONE to join in his adventures!
Grace Newson: I play Molly, a smart and caring guppy who helps Gil to find Bubble Puppy. It's really fun playing Molly. She's full of spunk and talent and gets to sing and dance in all the musical numbers, as well as be a part of all the action.
2) What's the best thing about being a part of the show?
Brittany Hunter: The best thing about being a part of this show is looking into the crowd at all of the little ones in the audience completely mesmerized at seeing their favourite characters live on stage. It is heartwarming hearing their little voices yell out answers to the questions we ask them.
Grace Newson: The best part is definitely the response we get from the audience. Kids love the show and the energy they give us is infectious.
3) What has been the highlight of the tour so far?
Brittany Hunter: Oh boy, there are so many to choose from! Honestly every single day has a different amazing moment. I love hearing the audience ‘oooh’ excitedly when the lights first come down at the beginning of the show. It’s hearing the entire audience chant “guppies, guppies, guppies” during our rock concert. It’s getting the biggest, tightest hug you’ve ever received from an excited fan during a meet and greet. I can truly say that this is the most rewarding job I have ever had.
Grace Newson: We've had the opportunity to perform a few arena shows which feels like being a rock star!
4) Have you been in other children’s live theatricals?
Brittany Hunter: I have worked for Koba Entertainment for the past 6 years and have done many children’s live shows with them, including Dora the Explorer, Strawberry Shortcake, Doodlebops, Toopy and Binoo and The Backyardigans. And while I love performing in general, I would have to say that my heart lies in Children’s Theatre. Being able to bring this experience to kids all over North America is truly amazing!
Grace Newson: So far I haven't worked with any companies that would be considered Theatre for Young Audiences, but I love it and I will definitely continue after this.
5) What do you love most about touring?
Brittany Hunter: I love meeting children from all over the world! Getting the chance to bring this show to even the smallest of cities across Canada is such an amazing feeling. Most of the time this is the first live show that a child has ever seen and it is such an honour to be a part of that. I think introducing young children to theatre is such a special thing.
Grace Newson: I've loved having the opportunity to explore the country. It stays interesting because we are in a new city every couple of days, and each region of Canada differs so much from one to the next. It's a gorgeous country.
6) What do you do when you're not on tour?
Brittany Hunter: For the past 6 years I have been touring quite consistently, but when I am home I love to relax and catch up with family and friends. It’s hard being away for so many months of the year but it really makes you cherish what you have back home. I also perform frequently in local theatre productions in Winnipeg, with some of the most recent being American Idiot with Winnipeg Studio Theatre, Shrek the Musical at Rainbow Stage, and Billy Elliot at RMTC.
Grace Newson: I live in Vancouver and spend my time performing in musicals, writing and working at a restaurant in Kitsilano!
7) What is your favourite song to perform in the show?
Brittany Hunter: My favourite song to perform in the show would have to be “A Puppy Is A Guppies Best Friend”. I get to dance with my favourite little guy Bubble Puppy! It’s so fun, high energy and we really get the entire theatre up dancing with us. At a few points during the song I point out to the audience and get them to bark with us, just like Bubble Puppy! It’s so cute!
Grace Newson: My favourite song to perform is probably the rock concert at the end of the show. I get to rock around and dance with the other characters and the audience is always the loudest and most energetic at this point.
8) What is your favourite song to dance to in the show?
Brittany Hunter: My favourite song to dance to in the show is “Wag Your Tail”. It’s so catchy and just makes you want to get up and dance. Most times the audience can’t help it but spring out of their seats and dance along, wagging their tails too!
Grace Newson: My favourite song to dance is "Wag Your Tail", with Gil and Oona. It's when we are all at the Doggy Lost & Found and we wag our tails like Bubble Puppy in order to help us find him. The choreography is fun and the kids always dance and bark along with us which is so cute!
9) What can families expect to see and experience when they see Bubble Guppies Live! in Toronto?
Brittany Hunter: Our show is colourful, high energy and filled with rockin’ songs, dancing, and total engagement with the audience. We want everyone to get up out of their seats to dance and sing along with their favourite characters. The Guppies are always learning new things, and they encourage the audience to learn along with them. The show songs are about colours, science, the environment, climate, friendship and of course movement. It’s fun for the entire family!
Grace Newson: Families can expect to see their favourite Bubble Guppies characters live on stage, with tons of colour, fun songs from the shows, lots of dancing as well as opportunities to problem solve, learn new things and ask questions with the Bubble Guppies!
