OK. Most of my friends think I’m completely nuts, but I don’t want any of the traditional things that are marketed for Mother’s Day gifts. My dear family, please don’t get me cut flowers, yet another kitchen gadget, or even breakfast in bed… Here is my wish list for the perfect Mother’s Day.

Urban designers of the 19th Century had lamented the visible passing of pastoral or agricultural traditions. Many like Frederick Law Olmsted (Central Park, Mount Royal) witnessed the onslaught of the Industrial Revolution and the mass exodus from the countryside to the city. The concept of the urban park, as a respite for the physically and mentally exhausted came into vogue quickly. Mothers are a huge help when you become a mother for the first time, or so I would assume. I wouldn’t know, because my mom passed away while I was pregnant with my first child in 1999. Anyone who knew her would tell you she was a fascinating person. Each year on Mother’s day, I reflect on my relationship with her, and what I learned from her about being a mother.

In this sweet story, a baby bird is hatched while his mother is away.
