Who didn’t grow up loving the Addams Family? Yes, they’re sinister and odd but you can’t deny the fact that they’re amusing and so entertaining! The ‘death obsessed’ family makes its Canadian debut in an all new musical which opened at the Toronto Centre of the Performing Arts last Thursday (on November 16).
The show is largely based on the characters created by Charles Addams and hit television series about a very strange and bizarre family with father and mother, Gomez and Morticia Addams, their son and daughter Pugsley and Wednesday, a wacky Grandma, the outrageous Uncle Fester, and a rumbling Frankenstein-like servant named Lurch.
In this updated version, Wednesday has fallen in love with a ‘normal’ boy, Lucas, much to her parents’ dismay. Nevertheless, Gomez and Morticia agree to play host to Lucas’s mother and father in the Addams family haunted home, inviting them to a dinner party and promising to act normal for the sake of their daughter. The famously macabre Addams Family is put to the test during a night that will forever change their lives!
The show opens with the familiar theme song from the 1960’s television series, which serves as the overture… and the audience happily snaps its fingers along. There are even cameo appearances by “Cousin It” (the walking hair mound) and “Thing” (the enigmatic hand)!!
The show was delightful, wonderfully sung and well acted, and as dark as this family might be, this musical was a joy to watch! Hysterical and laugh-out-loud funny, we chuckled through many zany and witty moments!
The Addams Family is one of those feel good comedy musicals. It brought me back to my childhood and everything was amazing – from the cast, to the props and sets, special effects and the music. The choreography was fabulous and the costumes stunning. The show was well-scripted; but that’s what one would expect from the two outstanding writers, Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice, who also wrote the script for Jersey Boys (another show I loved!).
It’s the last week to catch the Addams Family – The Musical … The show closes November 27. So don’t miss it; it promises to be an evil yet fun and exciting night at the theatre! For more info, visit: www.dancaptickets.com/pages/addams.

Wasn’t here very long was it?
Yes, it was a very limited engagement. I was surprised as well. I think they are touring across North America, that’s why.
I’m not sure I’d see this one.
