I have often arrived early for a shoot and found myself getting ready while the kids are eating or hanging out in the kitchen anticipating our session. It is amazing that you can achieve such powerful images in such an unconventional space. When you really think about it, however, as a child, the kitchen is a place where you relax but it is also a place that entices curiosity. Photographing kids in the kitchen will bring back those memories of how big and adventurous the kitchen is in a child’s eyes.
Many kitchens will have amazing light sources. Use it to your advantage or even use a telephoto lens to emphasize that window light. Of course, a shoot in the morning is the best option for this subject matter. I imagine a night shoot in the kitchen might seem a bit strange…
Kitchens are for eating, cooking and having fun. Why not capture the experience?! I was lucky in this case – the mom served raspberries. That has got to be the most artsy and easy to photograph fruit there is when it comes to kids (it is safe to say that I recommend it). If you premeditate a kitchen shoot with your kids, I recommend that you choose your food wisely.
Have fun, explore new perspectives. Ordinary objects like tables, chairs and cupboards appear to be fascinating through the eyes of child. The unconventional use of these objects will only make your images more interesting.
Depending on how you look at all of these objects, you will find that there are a lot of pleasing lines and designs based on your perspective. Get down to their level and try to capture how this place used to be so big.
The results can be amazing, but only if the area is interpreted correctly. Again, the idea is to emphasize a child’s perspective which will add to the feel of the images. Use the available light to the best of your ability and try to avoid shooting at eye level. Use the surrounding environment to your advantage and let your kids explore the space while you capture their fascination and curiosity.
