Festival of Cool: The Arctic at Harbourfront

Date/Time

Dec 10, 2019 to Dec 15, 2019

Description

Harbourfront Centre brings the ‘cool’ back to Toronto this season with the second edition of the Festival of Cool, spotlighting an area that evokes both fascination and adversity –the Arctic. Often only seen through the lens of international climate talks and debates on access to untapped resources, this rapidly melting polar region will see new light as Festival of Cool: Arctic presents perspectives through a different lens – its people.

Taking place December 10 – 15, 2019, this all ages festival is inspired by and celebrates the International Year of Indigenous Languages with programming from across the Arctic Circle including contemporary music, film, visual art and thought-provoking panels – proving that even extreme cold can be cool. The majority of the Festival of Cool’s programming is FREE to attend.

Escape the long nights of winter with The Arctic Night, a one-night-only choose-your-own-adventure mega-concert and immersive art experience in partnership with Toronto’s favourite winter inter-arts series, Long Winter. Dubbed a “singular, unmissable” event by the Globe and Mail, this edition of Long Winter features a line-up of Toronto talent with expanded programming featuring artists from across the Arctic Circle.

Debuting in Toronto at the Festival of Cool, Ikumagialiit (‘those that need fire’) is a new Indigenous performance art show featuring contemporary Uaajeerneq (Greenlandic mask dance), throat singing, electric cello and beats, with hand-drawn ‘light’ and video.
