The Word On The Street’s Summer Spectacular

Aug 17, 2020 to Aug 28, 2020

This event occurs weekly, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Explore your imagination with The Word On The Street’s Summer Spectacular—two weeks of FREE daily virtual programming for kids and teens, with activity-based learning, readings by featured authors, writing workshops, and some friendly competition! Spark creativity and connect with your local book community at our first ever virtual festival of storytelling, ideas & imagination.

August 17-19 – Fun for Early Readers (3-8)
What makes a book? Classroom favourites Ruth Ohi and Ted Staunton are here to show you! Explore the outdoors (through art & science) with Darren LeBeuf and a special presentation from the Ontario Science Centre. Become captivated by tales from Toronto Storytelling Festival tellers and others.

August 24-26 – Mid-Grade Adventures (9-12)
Stretch your writing chops with fun activities with the Ripple Foundation, learn about pirate queens and life on the high seas with Helaine Becker, and chill your friends to the bone with campfire tale tips from the spook master himself, Joel A. Sutherland! Ready for some friendly competition? Sign up for a spelling bee from Spelling Bee of Canada (aussi en français)!

August 20, 21 & 27 – Storytelling Arts (12+)
Join award-winning cartoonist Ani Castillo, globetrotting storyteller Mariella Bertelli, and spoken word phenom Jennifer Alicia as they share their craft in interactive Zoom workshops! Tune into the Inspire Teen Reads competition to find out what should be next on your TBR pile, and explore your neighbourhood in a new way with local love-lettering enthusiast Lindsay Zier-Vogel.

August 28th – Party Day!
Come hang out with WOTS! With readings from young writers, an art slideshow with YOUR masterpieces, a panel of young book experts talking about their favourite new titles, and a dance party with a special musical guest to boogie the afternoon away!
