The Tooth Fairy

Your child is about to lose their first tooth! What an exciting time! If your child’s tooth has been showing signs of wiggling, read on for special tips… We also thought we'd make the whole Tooth Fairy ritual a little more fun by showcasing some nifty products.

WHAT TO DO WITH THE TOOTH?

As tradition would have it, kids place the tooth under their pillow for the tooth fairy to collect it, replacing the lost tooth with a small payment. Since the tooth can be easily lost, we’re recommending some proper receptacles.

Here’s a really cute colourful bag you can make yourself complete with a special tooth-shaped pocket for the baby tooth. The Tooth Fairy can take away the tooth and leave the loot in the bag. Make different colours for the different kids (and teeth!) in your life. Get instructions.

This adorable Wooden Milk Teeth Container available on Etsy suits boys and girls equally. Parents can also use it to store teeth. $4.00 US. If you search for Tooth Fairy Box on Etsy, you'll find a long list of options

SELECTING THE CURRENCY OR LOOT

Some parents opt for chocolate gold coins, gold dollar coins, a dollar bill sprayed with glitter, or a shiny new quarter. Some will leave a token gift: a book or a small toy. For first time parents, remember that your little one has many teeth to lose, so start low - you’re going to have to maintain that level of payment for the next 8 years! You can always increase payments as you go, but decreasing is not an option! According to a recent study done by VISA, the average child gets $3 but some parents can leave up to $20. It's a good time to be a kid with a loose tooth! Oh and you should also leave a toothbrush and some floss!

This Tooth Fairy Gift Card and Coin we found on the Canada Post website would be something cool to leave. It's a one of its kind struck 25-cent piece, not with the Queen, but with the Tooth Fairy! Envelopes are included to enable immediate posting. While supplies last.

THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT!

When it comes to how much money the Tooth Fairy should leave, parents can often be unsure. It this is the case, VISA has launched a Facebook Tooth Fairy Calculator application. The app is also available on iTunes.

WHAT DOES THE TOOTH FAIRY DO WITH ALL THE TEETH?

Some kids can actually be quite concerned about what happens to the lost teeth. Some have known to lose sleep, cry, and ponder endlessly over this question. While moms and dads do tuck the teeth away for safekeeping, here are some stories we’ve heard - that you can share with your child.

- The Fairies grind the teeth to make magic pixie dust.
- Some Fairies turn them into new teeth for babies (yuck!).
- The teeth were used to make a giant castle for all the Tooth Fairies.
- The teeth are sent to the Dentist so he/she can examine them and find ways to make them stronger and healthier.

Books such as "You Think It's Easy Being the Tooth Fairy" can be an essential guide for every child about to lose a tooth. There are many other books available that alleviate fears and reassure children about dealing with the loss of a tooth. Check at your local library.

YOUR CHILD LOSES THE TOOTH (LITERALLY!)

It happens. It's a tiny tooth and it can get lost. Or, your child may have simply swallowed it! Ask your child to write a letter to the Tooth Fairy explaining the predicament. She'll understand.

THE TOOTH FAIRY FORGETS TO COME

This is obviously very disappointing to toothless children. Use tactics such as hiding the money under someone else’s pillow in the house, claiming that the Tooth Fairy got mixed-up. Or ask the child to double check under the pillow (after you’ve promptly remedied the situation). As a last resort, have your child write a complaint letter to the Tooth Fairy and leave it out the following evening at bedtime. Promise that the Fairy will respond promptly and perhaps even leave an extra quarter for the trouble (and an apology note).
