The Ultimate Dinosaurs at the ROM
The fascinating new exhibition Ultimate Dinosaurs: Giants from Gondwana is currently on display at the ROM. It's the largest exhibition of southern dinosaurs ever mounted in North America and the largest dinosaur exhibition of its kind in the ROM's history. You'll experience dinosaurs never seen before!
In fact, the dinosaurs on display are not your average dinos. They include the Giganotosaurus, Carnotaurus, Amargasaurus, Cryolophosaurus, Suchomimus, Majungasaurus, Ouranosaurus, Futalognkosaurus – this last one is the largest dinosaur ever mounted in Canada. It’s so big the ROM had to put it in the lobby. If these dinosaur names sound foreign to you, it’s because this new breed of dinosaurs are virtually unknown to North Americans. Most have just been uncovered in the last 20 years and have never been displayed in Canada before. You can find out more about them here.
The exhibition helps us learn more about these mesmerizing creatures in so many different ways. It has more multi-media than any exhibition in the ROM's history, including reactive walls that use body-scanning technology. It's also the first exhibition in Canada to use Augmented Reality to bring dinosaurs to life. Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology which layers digital information over a real environment to produce three-dimensional, life-like visuals. Three augmented reality stations allow you to experience dinosaurs in really cool ways. iPads are provided or you can bring your own.
In addition to augmented reality, the exhibition features a range of interactive experiences that both adults and kids will love. Reactive Walls using body-scanning technology walls show dinosaurs from the northern and southern hemispheres that react to visitors' movements as they approach. Other innovative technologies are used in the exhibition to illustrate the story of how a dynamic Earth with drifting continents affected the evolution of dinosaurs, from a Southern perspective.
And for kids who like to get hands-on, they can play with interactive exhibits. Touch real fossils, journey through time, learn how fossils are made, understand why dinosaurs were so huge, and find many more activities.
Don’t miss The Ultimate Dinosaurs: Giants from Gondwana. It’s on for a limited time and closes its doors in March 2013. It's also a world premiere for Toronto, so you're seeing it first!
