Shakespeare's dramatic genius has inspired numerous adaptations of his work for ballet, but perhaps no choreographer has managed to capture either the richness and power of his characterizations, or his sublime gift for emotional nuance and thematic depth, as John Cranko. The production that the company dances today was re-designed beautifully in 1995 by Susan Benson. The puppet Pinocchio has one dream; he wants to be a real boy. In order to be a real boy, he needs to prove himself worthy. It appears his dream may never come true, as Pinocchio is constantly getting into mischief. He is disrespectful to his kind father Gespetto. He skips school and sells his school books in order to attend a puppet show. There he runs into a bad character and Pinocchio is easily convinced to run off to the Land of Hooky. When he gets there, things are not as he thought and Pinocchio is transformed into a donkey! He is really in trouble now. With the help of the Blue Fairy, Pinocchio is able to escape and he returns home to his loving father and proves he has learned his lessons and all his dreams come true.
