Wedgwood: Artistry and Innovation
The ROM brings together for the first time a selection of close to 100 objects drawn primarily from its outstanding collection of Wedgwood wares, the finest in Canada. Through these historical and contemporary pieces, the exhibition explores the genius of founder Josiah Wedgwood I (1730-1795), whose diverse and high quality products and business practices revolutionized the English ceramics industry in the 18th century. Presented in the Samuel European Galleries, the exhibition features pieces of “Queen’s Ware” from the table of Catherine the Great, copies of the famed “Portland Vase”, a black basalt relief weighing 800 lbs, cameo medallions and jewellery.

Child's Play
Based exclusively on the McMichael’s permanent collection, Child’s Play is an educational exhibition exploring the theme of children in Canadian art. Curated by the education and programs department at the McMichael, this exhibition is strongly narrative in character. The twenty-five presented works offer a glimpse into the intimate world of childhood and parenthood, where along the usual conveyance of love, joy and dreams, there is a sombre anxiety or a sense of struggle in coping with reality. Child’s Play examines the challenge of growing up in a world infused with the social and political conflicts of adults—a world in which even “child’s play” is not as simple and straightforward as it may appear.

Harvest of Memories - Mexican Days of the Dead
The universal story of birth, life, and death - of sowing, cultivation, and harvest – comes to life in this richly layered multimedia exhibition. Dominated by a monumental altar specially built at the Gardiner, the works on display have been commissioned from some of Mexico’s most prominent popular artists, including colourful papier-mâché skeletons by the Linares family, reproductions of prints by Guadalupe Posada and a clay tree of life by Tiburcio Soteno. The exhibition will be animated by several of the artists working at their craft (weaving, sculpting, toy making and glazing) in a studio space inside the exhibition. A powerful photo essay brings the story home by portraying the lives of Mexican farm workers here in Ontario as well as back home in their own communities. Superbly Mexican, this exhibition is vibrant, satirical, emotional, thoughtful and joyous.
