Darwin: The Evolution Revolution

Darwin: The Evolution Revolution opens at the ROM on March 8, 2008. It's the most complete exhibit ever on Darwin and evolution, featuring personal artifacts, live animals & fun family activities. Darwin: The Evolution Revolution, a wide-ranging exhibition explores the life and work of Charles Darwin, whose curiosity, observations and discoveries nearly 150 years ago forever changed our understanding of the origin and nature of all species, including our own. The exhibition is on display in the ROM’s Garfield Weston Exhibition Hall, located on Level 2B in the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal. The ROM is the first Canadian venue to host Darwin during its international tour.

On Pointe: The Rise of the Ballet Shoe

On Pointe captures the exacting and exquisite art of ballet through one of its most essential elements, the ballet shoe. The exhibition will feature approximately 50 artifacts drawn from the Museum's private collection as well as historical and contemporary examples on loan from The Shoe Room, the principal supplier of pointe shoes in Canada. Highlights include: A pair of ballet slippers worn by Marie Taglioni, considered the first ballet dancer to dance on pointe (on loan from the Musée de l'Opera Garnier and the French National Library in Paris), Beautiful contemporary and historical imagery, Video footage illustrating gruelling practice and glittering perfomance Ballet shoes worn by famous dancers, including Karen Kain, Margot Fonteyn, Carla Fracci and Rudolf Nureyev.

Shanghai 1860-1940: Historical Photographs

A companion to the Shanghai Kaleidoscope exhibition, Shanghai 1860 -1940: Historical Photographs provides an intimate glimpse of Shanghai in the late 19th and early 20th century, a rich yet tumultuous period in its history. Personal, powerful and poignant images chronicle a century of the city’s architecture, people and way of life up to the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. The exhibit includes images from the ROM’s extensive collections of historical photographs, including recent gifts by Joey and Toby Tanenbaum and Jacob Way and Amelia Gertrud Way- Evans, and 12 photographs by celebrated photographer Sam Tata (1911-2005) on loan from the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography in Ottawa. The exhibition will be presented in the Herman Herzog Levy Gallery.

Shanghai Kaleidoscope

Organized by the Institute for Contemporary Culture (ICC) at the ROM, Shanghai Kaleidoscope offers an unprecedented view of one of the world's most dynamic cities, highlighting an emerging generation of Chinese artists, architects, and fashion designers. Examining Shanghai as a laboratory for 21st-century urban creation, the exhibition brings together an adventurous mix of art and video installations, photo-works, designer fashion apparel and runway videos by the city's leading contemporary artists and designers. The exhibition will be presented in the Roloff Beny Gallery in the ROM’s Michael Lee-Chin Crystal.

Wedgwood: Artistry and Innovation

The ROM brings together for the first time a selection of close to 100 objects drawn primarily from its outstanding collection of Wedgwood wares, the finest in Canada. Through these historical and contemporary pieces, the exhibition explores the genius of founder Josiah Wedgwood I (1730-1795), whose diverse and high quality products and business practices revolutionized the English ceramics industry in the 18th century. Presented in the Samuel European Galleries, the exhibition features pieces of “Queen’s Ware” from the table of Catherine the Great, copies of the famed “Portland Vase”, a black basalt relief weighing 800 lbs, cameo medallions and jewellery.

Sunday Best – Fancy Victorian Clothing at the Oshawa Museum

In celebration of our weekly summer Victorian Teas in the Henry House Gardens, the Oshawa Community Museum and Archives presents the exhibit “Sunday Best – Fancy Victorian Clothing” on display until Fall 2008. This exhibit features both men’s and women’s Victorian clothing and accessories, focusing on formal and classy pieces from the Museum’s own collection. Also showcased are archival pieces such as photographic images of people in Victorian attire and advertisements from local Oshawa newspapers. The Victorian period began at the commencement of Queen Victoria's reign in June 1837 and ended at her death in January 1901. The Victorians experienced tremendous changes in the economic, social, cultural and political arena during their age. This also included the area of fashion trends and clothing styles. Our Victorian Teas happen every Thursday in July and August between 11:30am and 1:30pm. The price for admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tea includes a selection of teas, scones, sandwiches and desserts, and a tour of the museum. Reservations are required. Join us at the Oshawa Community Museum & Archives for tea and a tour, and step into the past through fashion!

If You Could Travel to Mars, Would You Go?

FACING MARS, our new interactive exhibition, will challenge you to consider what we face in our quest to reach the planet. Featuring more than 30 interactive exhibits, FACING MARS: Would You Survive the Journey? encourages you to "walk on Mars", test and launch rockets and "fly over" the Martian landscape. This thought-provoking exhibition was entirely developed by the Science Centre in consultation with leading experts from the field of space exploration.

Roots to Rhythm: Caribana Art Exhibit

A COLOURblind! travelling art exhibit produced by the Association of African Canadian Artists, Roots to Rhythm features 70 works on canvas by artists of African Canadian heritage. Curated by internationally renowned African-Canadian artist and activist Joan Butterfield, this installation will be on display in the Museum’s 3rd Floor Centre Block during the final week of Scotiabank Caribana 2008, North America’s largest outdoor event celebrating Caribbean and African Canadian culture.
