Makom: Seeking Sacred Space

Through David Kaufman's series on the once and present synagogues of the Plateau Mont-Royal and David Cowles' images of Jewish sites in North Africa, this photography exhibition looks at how sacred space is created, experienced, preserved, and transformed over time. In the Loggia Gallery through August 14. In the Jacobs Lounge Visual Arts Space at the Miles Nadal JCC from August 18 to September 15.

29th annual International Festival of Authors

The 29th annual International Festival of Authors (IFOA) plays host to many of the world’s pre-eminent established and emerging literary artists for eleven days this October. See authors live on stage, mingle with literary celebrities and have books signed. The Festival presents a number of special events including readings by Scotiabank Giller Prize and Governor General’s Literary Award finalists, and the awarding of the Harbourfront Festival Prize. Young readers also have an opportunity to see their favourite authors during YoungIFOA (October 28, 30, 31). This year, YoungIFOA takes the form of “book days,” full day programmes tailored to a specific age group from Grades K to 9. This year, IFOA presents a special focus on Irish writers and writing, in collaboration with guest curator Colm Tóibín, as well as a focus on writers and playwrights from Quebec. IFOA also presents a number of events outside the GTA, in Hamilton, Burlington, Parry Sound, and Barrie, as well as special partnerships with select theatres in Toronto. The public can visit readings.org throughout the summer for Festival updates. Events take place primarily at the York Quay Centre, 235 Queens Quay West, and at the Premiere Dance Theatre, 207 Queens Quay West. Tickets to most events are $15, $12 for members, free for students.
