Markham Museum is a 25-acre recreated Village representing life from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Features Historic Homes and Businesses, a Land Transportation Exhibit, Historic Gardens, an Apple Orchard and a brand new Wet Meadow that bring the Museum to life as we celebrate Markham's first immigrants and its Natural Heritage.

PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAMS (Ages 3-5)

Exploring Nature - 1 hour 15 min
What are mammals? Can you find evidence that mammals and other animals live at the museum? Children explore our site, classify their finds, and make a collage.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Early Settler Programming
A Day in the Village - 4 hours plus 1/2 hour for lunch
One of our most popular programmes, Day in the Village includes a guided tour of our 25 acre historic village plus pioneer crafts. Learn about the early settler's to Markham and what it was like to live in the 19th century.

Mini Day in the Village - 2 hours
Enjoy a guided tour of our historic village. Visit our general store, a log cabin and other early settler buildings, plus one pioneer craft.

Canadian Heritage Overnights
Spend the night at the museum! Learn about early Markham settlers and their role in Canadian History. Participants sleep indoors in an exhibition hall. Breakfast is provided. Please call the museum to receive the information packet.

Explore Our Neighbours from the Past
Mennonites: Markham Pioneers - 2 hours
Using the Jacob Roth collection of folk sculptures depicting Mennonite life, participants will learn about the Mennonite community past and present and create their own sculptures of their life today.

Dragon Robes: The Imperial Court in China - 1.5 hours
Learn about 3000 years of Chinese Court history through the symbols on Imperial Court robes. Participants will create their own symbols and design a robe of their own.

Environment and Nature Programmes
Pond and Meadow Exploration (Fall and Spring only) - 2.5 hours
Learn plant and animal identification while exploring our pond and meadow. How can we tell if an animal has been here? What kind of organisms live in a pond? Learn the answers to these questions and more!

What is With the Weather? (Fall and Spring only) - 2 hours
Participants will learn about temperature, rain and clouds through hands-on activities. Includes charts to track weather for the nine days following the program.

Become a Bird Watcher - 1.5 hours
Learn about bird habits, and birds that live in our area. Participants make birdfeeders and learn about spotting birds, then take their knowledge out on a bird walk.

PROGRAMS AT YOUR SCHOOL

School Age - 19th Century Technology Programmes

We can do these programmes at your school! These exploration based programs give participants the opportunity to design and create with real materials, and then problem-solve to make their designs better.

Electrifying Electricity - 1.5 hours, 3 hours, or 5.5 hours over 1, 2, or 3 days
One new technology in the 19th century that changed our world was the harnessing of electricity. In this hands-on program, participants will learn the history of electricity and explore how electricity works through experience with wires, batteries and bulbs.

Watermills: Another Source of Power - 1.5 hours, or 3 hours over 1, or 2 days
19th century factories ran on water power. Mills sprung up across North America, harnessing water from water sources to power factories. Learn the history of mills and design a working water mill.
