No Fooling -14 Hippos in CN Tower Elevator?

CN Tower Presents Enhanced Elevator with Glass Floor Panels

On April 9, 2008, the CN Tower introduced North America's first and the world's highest glass floor paneled elevator as one of its glass-fronted elevators now offers a thrilling new perspective on the view 346m (1,136 ft) straight down.

“It’s been suggested with the timing and extreme nature of the announcement – that it might be an April Fools gag. We want everyone to know it’s really happening,” says Jack Robinson, Chief Operating Officer of the CN Tower. “The CN Tower is an internationally renowned entertainment and dining destination and we’re always looking for ways to provide visitors with a memorable experience and added value,” continues Robinson. “See for yourself April 9th. If you thought a ride aboard glass fronted elevators was special – wait until you experience this new elevator.”

The new elevator will be available beginning 11am on April 9, 2008 as part of the CN Tower’s do-it-all ticket the Total Tower experience. The Total Tower is the CN Tower’s best value ticket and includes Look Out, Glass Floor and Sky Pod Observation Levels, Film, and Motion Theatre Ride for $32.99 plus applicable taxes (over 30% savings).

As part of the Tower’s ongoing upgrades, the elevator car replacement was recently completed to include two glass floor panels each almost 2 1/2 in thick which combined total 5¼ square feet of floor space. The glass panels in the enhanced elevator were designed using the same technology, strength and durability standards of the CN Tower’s famous Glass Floor which has been walked on and experienced by millions of people since it was first installed in 1994.

Much like the Tower’s Glass Floor, the new glass panels are five times stronger than the weight bearing requirement for the elevator floor.

But can the elevator hold the weight of 14 hippos like the Tower’s Glass Floor? We’ll never know because of course they’ll never fit in the elevator!
