Scouts Canada - Making A Better World
By Christina Friend Scouts Canada, Greater Toronto Council
"Our Scout Law and Promise, when we really put them into practice, take way all occasion for wars and strife among nations." --Lord Robert Baden-Powell, Founder of Scouting
Though the idea of Scouting came from a man who served in the army, Baden-Powell wanted his youth movement to be a catalyst for world peace. Almost every country on earth has embraced Scouting since the idea was put forth in 1907 and for a good reason; Scouting is a way for kids to gain skills and self-esteem while helping the world at the same time.
Here in Canada, a country rich with its diverse population, Scouting has become a way for children and their parents to embrace their citizenship make life-long friends and have a positive impact in their community. Furthermore, as Scouting is shared around the world. A variety of customs and cultures among the children only enhances the Canadian Scouting experience!
Today, many Scout groups represent a wonderful mosaic of cultures. By wearing the uniform and working as a team, cultural differences are appreciated but do not divide the children. Instead, both adults and youth benefit by learning about each other and their unique backgrounds. What's most important in Scouting is what the children have in common: a love of the outdoors and helping others as they grow and learn.
Scouting in Canada can become an inspiration to people around the world. We truly believe that when youth from all walks of life are brought together to focus on a common goal they can create a worldwide momentum for peace; starting in their own communities.
