Making The First Day Easier
By: Toronto4Kids
It's perfectly normal to feel anxious on the first day of school. Getting back into the school routine, getting a new teacher and adjusting to new workloads takes some getting used to - especially after a long summer break. Here are some tips to go over with your child. Before you know it, everything will probably settle down pretty quickly once you get back into your everyday schedule.
Remind your child that he/she is not the only student who is a bit uneasy about the first day of school. School staff understand that some students may be apprehensive and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible. Day one is all about introductions and getting organized. Don't expect too much pressure!
Point out the positive aspects of starting school: it will be fun! Kids will meet up with old friends and become acquainted with new ones. Refresh your child's memory about previous years, when they returned home after the first day with excitement because they had a great day!
Find another child in the neighbourhood with whom your child can walk to school or ride with on the bus.
If you feel it is appropriate, drive your child (or walk with them) to school and pick them up on the first day.
