Dinos are back at the ROM!
By: Toronto4Kids Bigger, bolder and better! The ROM is featuring one of Canada's largest permanent collections of dinosaurs, with a display of exciting and popular specimens such as the Tyrannosaurus rex, the Deinonychus, the Hadrosaurs and the Barosaurus, among many others.
The new James and Louise Temerty Galleries of the Age of Dinosaurs and the Gallery of the Age of Mammals, opened to the public in December of 2007.
The new galleries are located on Level 2 of the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal and feature more than 750 specimens including about 50 dinosaur specimens, of which 20 are complete or nearly complete skeletons, over 350 fossils, as well as 26 full mammal skeletons, representing the diversity of life during the Age of Dinosaurs and the Age of Mammals.
The galleries are divided into two general themes, Life on Land and Life in the Sea, and display fossils from the Jurassic (200 to 145 million years old) and Cretaceous (145 to 65 million years old) Periods.
Next to the Temerty Dinosaur Galleries you'll find the Gallery of the Age of Mammal, featuring the Cenozoic Era (65 million years ago). You'll see fossil mammals, plants, insects, corals, fish and turtles from this era when mammals ruled the earth.
Over the holidays, the ROM experienced record-breaking attendances when it offered family-oriented Dinosaur fun. Kids became dinosaur detectives and were able to explore some creativity by modelling dinosaur sculptures, designing their own dinosaur, and uncovering dinosaur fossils like real palaeontologists.
The new James and Louise Temerty Galleries of the Age of Dinosaurs and the Gallery of the Age of Mammals are on display until December 2010. Be ready to see some of the most remarkable dinosaurs in the world! For more info, visit: www.rom.on.ca.
