WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A MARTIAL ARTS SCHOOL
by Cezar Borkowski and Marion Manzo Finding a suitable martial arts school can be challenging. Selecting a particular style or type is not nearly as important as the level of academic and administrative service the organisation will provide. The checklist below can help simplify this daunting task: | ◊ | Is this a well-established organisation that has been in business for several years or decades? Does it have a solid reputation among consumers, media and the Better Business Bureau? | | ◊ | Can you participate in a trial class or introductory program before enrolling in a course? Does it offer a 30-day money-back guarantee? | | ◊ | Are there dozens of certified, professional black belt teachers? | | ◊ | In addition to strong martial arts expertise, what are their other related credentials (ex: first-aid/CPR, education, counseling, athletic therapy, health care, etc.)? | | ◊ | Are classes taught in a professional full-time, designated martial arts facility? Does it have martial arts training surfaces and equipment? | | ◊ | Is the school owner-operated? If you have a question or concern, is the school director on-site? | | ◊ | In the event you need to discuss program details, will you have an assigned Enrollment Director and/or Administrative Manager? | | ◊ | Does the organisation have multiple metro locations and international affiliation? If you move or travel frequently, this is an important service. Furthermore, it can provide interesting learning opportunities in the form of guest teachers and international experts. | | ◊ | Does the school provide a convenient, student-driven schedule? One that includes extended hours of operation, classes 7 days a week, sessions conducted early & mid-mornings, lunchtime, evenings and weekends, year-round? | | ◊ | Does the school offer a nurturing, supportive environment for children, teens, adults and families? Are there family classes, discounts and activities for friends and relatives and are parents encouraged to observe classes, evaluations and exams? | | ◊ | What is the student-to-teacher ratio? Depending on the age and belt level of each class, experts recommend a maximum ratio of eight students to each teacher. | | ◊ | Is the curriculum well-rounded? Do program offerings include body-mind-spirit education and extend to topical issues (ex: yoga, bullying, street-proofing, sports safety, relaxation, cross-training, etc.)? | | ◊ | Are belt level requirements detailed in print or electronic format? | | ◊ | Will your progress be monitored regularly? Does the school track attendance and perform regular (ex: monthly) evaluations? Are refresher classes offered free of charge (if you've been away, ill or busy)? | | ◊ | Is tuition 'all-inclusive' (ex: uniforms, crests, study manuals, training equipment, exams, belts, evaluations, refreshers and special events)? |
