Free Flicks: Retro Reels at Harbourfront


Your favourite 80s movies are back! 
 
TORONTO, June 18, 2009 – The popular Free Flicks outdoor film series re-launches this summer at Harbourfront Centre with host Erica Ehm (former Much Music VJ). This year Free Flicks is offering a series of 80s themed films including cult classics such as Pretty in Pink, Desperately Seeking Susan and Labyrinth.

Every Wednesday evening beginning July 8 through to August 12, Free Flicks presents films on the SIRIUS Satellite Radio Stage big screen by the lake. All films begin at 9 p.m., are free and are screened rain or shine unless otherwise specified. (Full schedule follows).

Pretty in Pink (1986) is a film based on teenage love and social cliques in the 80s in American high schools. Featuring a girl from the wrong side of the tracks (Molly Ringwald), a geeky new-waver who worships her, a rich high school hunk who has her eye, and John Hughes director of such classics as The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. (Rated: AA)

Breakin’ (1984), a struggling young jazz dancer (Lucinda Dickey) meets up with two break dancers and soon becomes a sensation on the street with her hybrid dance style. Featuring performances by ICE-T in his film debut as a club MC. (Rated: PG)

Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), a bored suburban housewife (Rosanna Arquette), seeking adventure accidentally gets hit on the head, wakes up with amnesia, and is mistaken for a free-spirited New York City drifter named Susan (Madonna). (Rated: AA)

Stop Making Sense (1984) is an innovative concert movie for featuring The Talking Heads. The movie is notable for being the first made entirely of digital audio techniques. (Rated: PG)

Say Anything (1989) follows a noble underachiever Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) on his quest to go out with beautiful and intelligent valedictorian Diane Courte (Ione Skye), before she goes off to college in the fall. (Rated: AA)

Labyrinth (1986) is a film by Jim Henson featuring 15-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) who accidentally wishes her baby half-brother Toby (Toby Froud), away to the Goblin King Jareth (David Bowie) who will keep Toby if Sarah does not complete his Labyrinth in 13 hours. (Rated: PG)
