Safe Sizer Choking Prevention Plate

According to Safe Kids Canada, an estimated 44 children aged 14 and under die every year in Canada from choking, suffocation and strangulation. Another 380 are hospitalized for serious injuries, half of which are from choking on food. Young children do not have the teeth required to grind food down to a small, safe size, so it’s essential to cut food into small pieces. But how small is small? 
 
Husband and wife team, David and Susan Zak had pondered over that same question while cutting up food for their 3 children, and that’s when they invented the Safe Sizer choking prevention plate. The Safe Sizer is a colorful child’s plate with a unique safety feature that helps reduce the risk of choking. The plate actually measures the maximum recommended bite size for children under 4 years old, who are eating solid foods.

The plate incorporates a ½ inch diameter ring molded into the plate, based on the US FDA's recognition of the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation that children under 4 years not be fed any round, firm foods unless they are cut up into pieces smaller than ½ inch in any direction. 
 
The Safe Sizer plate provides a reminder and measurement gauge for parents on how small to cut up food, as well as piece of mind when leaving their kids with caregivers less accustomed to feeding children, like grandparents and babysitters. This way, adults (and children too) can physically check food bits to make sure that they are a safe size for eating.
