Make Your Own Sidewalk Chalk
Kids can spend hours playing outside, drawing with chalk on the driveway. They can invent games, play hopscotch and four-square, and of course draw and create silly stories.
Have your kids spend the afternoon creating a sidewalk masterpiece. Enjoy it even more if your chalk is homemade!
1 cup plaster of Paris, 1 cup water, powdered tempera paint, a mold for chalk (small paper cups, paper rolls), and a mixing bowl and spoon.
In a large bowl, mix the water and plaster of Paris together. Add the powdered tempera paint. Once the paint has been mixed in, let it sit for a few minutes. Pour the mixture into a mold and let it dry. This can take several hours or up to a day, depending on the size of the mold. Once dry, remove the chalk from the mold. If the chalk is still wet, let it air dry for another day or so. Try working with different molds to give your chalk fun shapes. Silicon ice cube trays are a great option!
Your kids will have a blast doodling with the chalk they created. And if the rain washes their art away, they now have a blank canvas to start over!
