Kids' Climbing Programs at True North Climbing




Indoor rock climbing is a great way for kids to get some much needed activity when they head back to school this Fall. Rock climbing gives children the opportunity to burn off energy, build muscle strength and develop their confidence. Kids will love the Youth Recreational program offered at True North Climbing.

The program, for kids ages 6 to 17, focuses on learning and refining the fundamentals of climbing: body position, footwork and movement, as well as learning hold types, grades and all the terminology to turn them into proper climbers.

It runs three times a year: fall, winter and spring. Each program is 8-10 sessions long. For kids in the 6-8 and 8-10 year old groups, each session is 90 minutes long; for those in the 10-13 and 13-17 year old groups, each session is 2 hours long.

Each lesson typically begins with a warm up followed by a mix of challenges, exercises/drills, bouldering and top rope time. The younger age groups typically play more games and activities to teach terms and techniques, to keep it fun and engaging. Kids in the older two categories also have the opportunity to learn how to top rope belay in a safe, supervised environment.

Registration is open to all levels of ability and no experience is necessary. The equipment required – shoes, harness and chalk, is all included during the sessions.

All youth programs qualify for the Federal Government Children’s Fitness Tax Credit.

Is your family new to climbing?

If you're first-time climber and want to bring your kids to climb, here are some of your options…

1.  You can boulder with your kids and perhaps return another time without the kids to take the 1 Hour Introductory Lesson.

2.  Book your kids into a Weekend Scramble Session, which is two hours of belay service on Saturday or Sunday, during which time you could take an Intro Lesson, or just sit back and relax.

3.  If there are two adults, you can take turns; one bouldering with the kids while the other takes the 1 Hour Introductory Lesson.

4.  If your children are mature enough, they can accompany you in the 1 Hour Introductory Lesson as your climber (or take the lesson with you, if they are 13 or older).
