Kid-Friendly Bakeries in Toronto

Christmas is quickly approaching (only 6 more days!), Holiday party prepping is underway, and children are tweaking their wish lists. In only a few short days Santa will make an appearance. But just before the celebrating begins, I put together a list of a few special places in the city that can make your festivities the favourite amongst friends and family.

I searched the city for bakeries, but not just any ordinary supplier of jelly-filled donuts, apple pies, or shortbread cookies. I found bakeries that happily cater to special diets - vegan, peanut free, egg free, gluten free, dairy free, and organic. In my quest, I was unexpectedly surprised at the collection of bake shops accommodating dietary restrictions. In a place where traditionally eggs are essential to creating a fluffy cupcakes, flour is needed to ensure the best pastry dough, and cream required to provide just the right amount of richness, these special bakeries were doing something wonderfully different.

Here are a few of my favourites:

Tori's Bake Shop
2188 Queen Street East (Queen and Balsam)
Vegan and Organic

Bakes & Goods
2523 Yonge Street (just north of Eglinton)
Nut Free, Egg Free also available by special order

559 Mount Pleasant Avenue (south of Eglinton)
Peanut and Tree Nut Free, Certified Kosher, Egg/Dairy/Gluten/Soy Free also available by special order

Cakes by Robert
134 Doncaster Avenue Unit# 5
Peanut and Tree Nut Free, Egg/Dairy Free also available by special order

My son is allergic to eggs and peanuts and we have frequented a few of these bakeries. His current favourite holiday treat is the Gingerbread House Kit from Tori's Bakeshop. The kit included gingerbread, icing, and mini candy canes, gumdrops, and gummy worms to decorate his masterpiece.

As with managing all restricted diets, it's important to contact the company directly, speak to the manager to confirm the safety of ingredients and suppliers, and ask about the kitchen protocols to ensure no cross-contmaniation of allergens. The extra efforts are well worth the peace of mind.
