Our Trip to African Lion Safari

On a warm Sunday afternoon we headed out on an adventure to Hamilton. We were about to see lions and elephants, giraffes and rhinos, zebras and cheetahs. My little boy's excitement was matched by my nostalgia for a familiar, but not-yet-visited place. We were on our way to African Lion Safari!

Take a look at our photos.

Tips:

African Lion Safari is located in Hamilton, Ontario and is about a 90 minute drive from Toronto.

Admission rates vary, but children under 2 are free.

There are a number of on-site attractions such as the Safari Bus Tour through the animal reserves (or you can drive your own car through), bird and animal shows, a boat cruise, scenic railway, and Misumu Wet Play area (set to open in June 2013).

We decided to ride the Safari Bus Tour. Tickets are an additional cost, but it was well worth it. The driver shared information about the animals, their habitats, and the conservation work happening at African Lion Safari.

The bird and animal shows are entertaining and educational. We really enjoyed the Elephant Round Up.

Picnics are permitted on-site and there are plenty of dining options throughout the park. We were most impressed with the fact that each concession stand had an allergen menu on hand that listed all of the food items and ingredients. For my son (who happens to be allergic to eggs and nuts), this meant that he could enjoy ice cream, cotton candy, and some fast food favourites. The allergen menu is also available on the African Lion Safari website.

Staff was friendly and helpful - in fact, the most customer friendly staff we've encountered in all of our Toronto travels.
