Must-Do Fall Activities for Kids in Resort and Vacation Areas North of Toronto

If the snow were to fly tomorrow, which is not totally un-possible, these are the activities parents should really try to do with their kids. Fall is not just a transition season, it has its own special qualities like a change in smell, change in daylight, vibrant background colours, and many other details that make the things we did as kids in the Fall stand out in our memories.

Fall is definitely the time to get out and about while it's easy to be mobile and Mother Nature is showing off. Road trips, day trips, and even short family getaways are a great idea while taking advantage of the outdoor beauty and less crowds wherever you go.

1. Cruisin'
Just because it's not beach weather does not mean the water is not the place to be this Fall. Kids love water, kids love boats, and cruising the beautiful waters of Ontario is a great way to spend a Fall day. Dress warm and in layers and enjoy the scenery and the ride. Fall colours peak late September and October. Midland Tours offers Georgian Bay Cruises out of Midland and Fall Colour Cruises on the Serendipity Princess out of Port Severn. Kids love seeing the Big Chute boat rail locks! Both vessels are large 200+ passenger ships, with inside and outside seating, snack and drink bars. If your kids are young, bring a few extra activities or small toys.

Rounds Ranch Pumpkin Mania Festival

2. Pumpkin Harvest Fun
Not only is this type of event loved by small children, parents end up with the sweetest of photo opportunities of their rosy cheek babes surrounded by pumpkins, hay bales, and corn stalks. Rounds Ranch has been rounding up western Fall themed fun with their Pumpkin Mania Festival and the event is one of the most popular Fall events north of Toronto. Everyone gets to ride a wagon to their own free pumpkin and pumpkin themed events include a catapult, bowling, seed spitting, pie eating, and hockey, dunking, and tossing! Kids can also find their way through the very large hay and pumpkin maze!

You will also find pumpkin and harvest fun at small town Fall fairs, which perhaps the best of all 'Northern' Ontario experiences for kids. Carnivals treats, midway rides, and a good demolition derby make memories that will last with your children for a lifetime. If your a foodie family, this is the time to hit the bountiful farmer's markets or even the Huronia Food Trail! Featured market: Midland Farmer's Market.

3. Get Movin' in the Great Outdoors – Hike, Bike, Trek, Explore!
Soon we'll be indoors more and Fall is the time to enjoy the outdoor space before it is cold and blanketed in white with snow. Physical activity has so many benefits for your kids' bodies, minds, and overall happiness and Ontario forests are the perfect place to let your kids get some exercise while exploring and finding adventure along the trails. Depending on your kids, choose an activity that is appropriate for their age and skill level. There are plenty of great Ontario trails or your family can head to the following locations to find maintained trails for biking, hiking, and other fun activities. The attractions below all offer more than trails, you can also find disc golf, zip lining, chair lift rides, and wildlife shows!
