Description:

Our mission is to engage our students with the world around them using eye, mind and hand. In our technologically-driven society it is increasingly important to pause and reconnect with the material world.

There is a fundamental drive in all of us to create. Young children naturally express what they see, think and feel through their artwork. Often, this natural process becomes inhibited as they grow up. At Freehand, we are committed to nurturing creativity in young children and re-igniting it in everyone else.

We provide a focused and informed approach to art instruction which allows students to discover the expressive possibilities of new materials and techniques. All of our instructors hold degrees in fine arts and/or education and are working artists.

Parties

Celebrate your birthday at Freehand! For ages 5 and up, we provide a variety of customizable projects that each participating child can create and take home to enjoy and show off.

Programs

Start with Art - JK/SK
These one-hour classes teach your child new ways of expressing themselves, solving problems and working with others. We will explore drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, collage and mixed media.

Drawing and Illustration - Grades 1 to 8
Drawing is the foundation of most art, and in this class you focus on building that foundation! Learn essential skills like proportion, perspective and shading to produce realistic and imaginative work.

Drawing and Painting - Grades 1 to 6
Explore key drawing concepts like proportion, shading, and perspective, then learn to incorporate them into paintings using watercolour, coloured inks, and acrylic paint.

Polymer Clay - Grades 1 to 3
Students will create 3-dimensional works including all kinds of animals and imaginary creatures using colourful polymer clay.

Mini Masters - Grades 1 to 5
Students will view the works of established artists and then be inspired to explore their ideas and techniques in a variety of mediums.

Art Fundamentals - Grades 6 to 8
Ideal for students who are considering applying to post secondary art programs, or for those who want to take time to really explore an idea and work on their pieces in depth.

Clay and Sculpture - Grades 1 to 5
Students will be taught step-by-step approaches to build sculptures out of wood, wire, plaster, clay and recycled materials.

Art 101 - Grades 4 to 6
This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of various mediums. Ideal for students who are interested in art but are not sure which class to take (or want to take them all!)

High School Art Fundamentals - Grades 9 to 12
For high school students who are considering applying to post secondary art programs. Portfolio requirements can be fulfilled.

Workshops

Family Workshops: Freehand offers family art workshops on a select Sunday of each month. Bring the kids and create a one-of-a-kind treasure together. Each workshop is led by a Freehand instructor who takes you step-by-step through the project so no experience is necessary. Parents/caregivers and children can choose to make their own pieces or work on one piece together. Artwork may be ready to take home the same day or may need to be picked up at a later date.

Workshops for Kids: Drop the kids off to enjoy an afternoon of creating! All levels welcome, no experience necessary. These are single classes for kids grades 1 to 8 to come in and create a finished project.

Camps

We have full day camps for P.A. Days, as well as for winter break, spring break, and all summer. In our camps we explore a variety of different mediums; painting, drawing, printmaking, clay modeling and many other fun art activities. Our camps run from 9:30am until 3:30pm, and kids can join us for the full day or either the morning or afternoon. Each half day they will finish a project to bring home.
