About MTM

Max the Mutt College of Animation, Art and Design was founded by artists and animators in 1996. Our goal is, and always has been, to create and maintain a vibrant, ethical community dedicated to passing on skills to upcoming generations, while fostering a sense of community. We offer three diploma programs: Classical and Computer Animation, Concept Art for Animation and Video Games, and Storytelling for Sequential Arts and Illustration. As well we have camps, workshops and portfolio development for ages 8 plus, and professional development courses.

We believe in taking our work seriously and encouraging students to keep their joy in creating alive. We believe in an inclusive environment where every student matters. Humility and mutual respect are the first requirements for growth, and for happy, creative, productive students! We seek students and instructors who share our vision.

Our instructors for our diploma programs are working professionals, drawn to Max the Mutt by their passion to share their expertise, by the prospect of small classes, motivated students, and an environment that values their input. Our annual curriculum reviews and updates reflect changes in the entertainment industries we serve, and instructors, because they are working professionals, are an invaluable part of this process. We are now in the wonderful position of having some faculty members who are graduates of MTM, successful professionals, happy to return to share their skills with upcoming generations.

Our graduates are working for companies including Pixar, Sony Imageworks, Guru Studio, Yowza Animation, Brown Bag9 Story Media, UbiSoft, ShadowMachine, Warner Brothers Games, Corus, Nelvana, the National Film Board/NFB and many others.

Our workshops follow a similar approach with professional standards in mind. Employing many of the same instructors that teach our diploma programs throughout the year, we offer a variety of workshops from season to season that cover a broad range of topics from Introduction to Animation to Professional Development to Introductory Foundational Skills. Our workshops and camps are small and are designed to be engaging and informative while providing students with one-on-one feedback.

Many campers and workshop participants often go on to apply to our college when they are graduating high school which is a wonderful experience for us as a school community. Having been part of a young artist's growth and development, supporting them as they further their education as artists forging creative careers is very rewarding indeed!
