Hello February! You might think the beginning of this chilly month doesn’t have much to offer but there’s plenty of free fun to be had with Winter carnivals and Family Day! Here's a list of free and cheap events taking place in and around the city this month!

Winter Carnivals in the GTA
Various Dates in February
During February, you'll find a long list of Winter carnivals in our great city and surroundings, where we can celebrate the joys and magic of Winter. Fabulous snow and ice sculptures, ice hockey, skating, skiing, snowshoeing, and dogsled pulls are just some of the ways to have fun during a Winter carnival. Many events are free with nominal charges for food and activities.

Free Admission to Varley Art Gallery of Markham in 2014
January to December 2014
The Varley Art Gallery of Markham is conveniently located in the historic village of Unionville, only 20 minutes from major highways and the City of Toronto. Through a generous gift by Kathleen to the City of Markham, the City and a group of dedicated volunteers undertook to build a 15,000 sq' gallery just doors away from the historic house on Main St. Unionville. The historic village of Unionville and the Varley Art Gallery of Markham represent the second most popular tourist attraction in York Region while serving the visual arts needs and interests for the people of Markham. Free admission.

This is a free readers' theatre program for Shakespeare Kids ages 7 to 12! Join SHAKESPEARE IN ACTION for storytelling adventures! Board Games Night – For All Ages at Gibson House
February 6, 2014 - 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm

As part of our Pay What You Wish Thursday Nights, the first Thursday of each month will be Board Games Night at Gibson House. The Gibson family didn't have cable, a phone or Wi-Fi, so what did they do when the chores were done? They played games! Finished your work and chores for the day? Then come to the museum to play the featured games of the month as well as the classic games in the Discovery Gallery.

Kuumba at Harbourfront
February 7 to 9, 2014

Harbourfront Centre gives Toronto a rich blend of Caribbean and African sounds and flavours at Kuumba (Feb. 7 to 9), part of the TD Then & Now Series and in association with Black Artists’ Network Dialogue (BAND). Together identity and legacy will be woven in throughout the weekend events, including comedy, dance, film, panel discussions, workshops, and family activities. Best of all, most events are free.

Introduce a friend to fishing! Ontario Family Fishing Events is a province-wide opportunity for Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters without the otherwise mandatory fishing version outdoors card. The Ontario Government designates two periods throughout the year as license-free, February 15-17, 2014 (12:01 am Saturday to 11:59 pm Monday) and July 5-13, 2014 (12:01 am Saturday to 11:59 pm Sunday). During all other time periods, Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years must purchase a valid fishing license to legally fish in Ontario. There has never been a better time to introduce a friend to fishing!
