York Academy of Martial Arts

For 25 years, the York Academy of Martial Arts has been Toronto’s number one family owned and operated traditional school of martial arts. The award-winning program emphasizes fitness, focus, and fun in class so kids find that taking lessons are enjoyable. Their use of challenging training experiences in conjunction with positive attitude developing ‘matt chats’ helps students to develop skill, confidence, and all of the tools they need to succeed in the real world.

At the York Academy of Martial Arts, children and youth karate classes offer an outstanding mix of traditional principles with practical real world skills. Students in the program develop their bodies, minds, and spirits through training their fundamental blocking, punching, kicking, and grappling techniques as well as traditional karate forms. In addition they learn to use their hearts and minds by cooperating with partners, thinking their way through drills and learning self defense concepts.

Classes are loaded with confidence and self esteem developing drills, as well as stress release drills and challenging games. Overall the program takes a traditional approach to developing the important 'self’s' of the child: self discipline, self confidence, self esteem, self control, self motivation, and self image, while at the same time providing a fun and motivational form of physical exercise.

Whether you have the next 'Karate Kid' on your hands or you are just looking for something to help junior burn off their inner ninja, these programs will work to help get the parents what they want and give their children what they need.

The school features two large training spaces and a team of over 40 dedicated helpers, along with certified adult instructors. All of the children's classes are broken down by age and skill level. This means your child will always be well looked after by adults and surrounded by peers, which is not something you will find everywhere.

There is no 'best age' to get started, nor is there any limit to when they can start. The York Academy of Martial Arts runs programs year-round. They also have dedicated beginner classes so starting ‘at any time' is always possible. Parents of very young children should let the school assess their child's readiness to learn if they are looking to start them between the ages of 4 and 6.
