Hamilton The Movie Arrives On Disney+ This July 3
The Broadway phenomenon heads to the small screen.
The widely anticipated movie, Hamilton, arrives on Disney Plus this Friday, July 3, to the delight of fans of the smash Broadway hit (and to the many who haven't had the opportunity to get tickets to the musical). The movie was originally scheduled to hit theatres in October 2021 but was moved to an online platform as a result of theatre closures during the coronavirus pandemic. The original Broadway production won 11 Tony Awards as well as the Pulitzer Prize for drama.
The streaming service is releasing a special filmed version of the original Broadway production of Hamilton, starring Lin-Manuel Miranda and directed by Thomas Kail. Originally filmed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June of 2016, the musical has been repurposed for the small screen, giving you the chance to enjoy the stage performance with cinema-quality images and full, immersive sound.
But there's one hitch — if you're not subscribed to Disney Plus, you won't be able to use a free trial to see the movie. Disney has recently shut down the free trial program, which means you'll need to watch Hamilton with a paid subscriber account.
Many are wondering if the Disney Plus version will be censored since the streaming service is billed as 'family-friendly'. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of Hamilton, officially confirmed the movie will censor 'F-bombs'. Still, the Hamilton movie shows a PG-13 viewer rating, which suggests that the musical's other cuss words and sexual content could possibly remain, with a warning at the show start.
Disney+ costs $8.99/month or $89.99/year in Canada. That includes access to offerings from Fox, Pixar, Marvel and National Geographic and allows subscribers to stream on multiple devices. The free trial is no longer available. Get info at www.disneyplus.com.
