Blueberry Picking Farms in the GTA

It's blueberry picking time! Celebrate National Blueberry Month by heading out to one of the many places in the Greater Toronto Area where you can pick your own.

Did you know that blueberries are really good for you? The total antioxidant capacity of blueberries is twice that of spinach and three times that of oranges. And they can also lower cholesterol!

Fresh blueberries are in their prime from mid July through August. When picking, select berries that are firm, dry, plump, smooth skinned, and completely blue, with no hint of red. They are often coated with a light white film called "bloom" which actually helps prevent deterioration. Water on the fruit accelerates rotting, so don't  wash them until you are ready to use them. If you store your freshly picked berries in the refrigerator, unwashed and covered, they should last up to two weeks. Freezing is always a good option too.
