10 Reasons Why Camp is Great
Children who go to Summer camp are very fortunate! Assuming that the program is safe and well run, Summer camp can open an entirely new world of friendship, interests, skills, and independence for your child. Whether your child is attending a day camp or an overnight camp, they will experience thrilling opportunities and experiences that simply aren’t available in school.
Here are 10 reasons why camp is so great!
1. Stay Active
Kids get to spend their day being physically active. Camp provides a wonderful opportunity to move, run, swim, jump, hike, and climb! Camp is full of action!
2. Gain Confidence
Kids will experience success and become more confident. Camp helps children build self-confidence and self-esteem. With its non-competitive activities and diverse opportunities to succeed, camp life is a real boost for youth. There’s something to accomplishment every day and camp teaches kids that they can! Being away from their parents, making new friends, trying new activities – these all help kids gain confidence as they grow up.
3. Reconnect with Nature
Kids today spend much less time outdoors, and many suffer from "nature deficit" brought on by modern life. But camp reconnects them with nature. They will see things like frogs, they will hike trails, they’ll experience swimming in a lake, or biking along a path. Camp gets kids back outside.
4. Unplug from Technology and Social Media
Camp is an opportunity to disconnect. When kids take a break from TV, cell phones, video games, and Facebook, they rediscover their creativity and engage the real world with real people and real activities. They realize there’s so much to do even without their electronics. Camp is real!
5. Form New Friendships
Camp is the place where kids make their very best friends. When you sleep in the same cabin with 7 or 8 other campers over a period of 6 days, great friendships can be formed. Free from the social expectations often found at school, camp encourages kids to relax and make friends easily. Camp draws everyone together... singing, laughing, talking, playing, doing almost everything together.
6. Camp is an Adventure
Have you ever gone horseback riding, played laser tag in the woods, jumped off a 20 foot high ropes platform, or drawn a bow in archery? Most would say no. These experiences, all done safely, are invaluable. Camp pushes children out of their comfort zone and exposes them to new activities and experiences that they may not be familiar with.
7. Develop Social Skills
Camp teaches children to communicate, to work together as part of a team and to be a leader. Kids join a close-knit community where everyone must agree to cooperate and respect each other. When they live in a cabin with others, kids share chores, resolve disagreements, and see firsthand the importance of sincere communication. Sharing resources and attention helps foster teamwork and the desire to participate.
8. Become Independent
Camp is the perfect place for kids to practice making decisions for themselves without parents and teachers guiding their every move. They can manage their daily choices with the safety net of insightful counselors and staff in a safe environment. Children welcome this new freedom. Camp helps kids develop who they are.
9. Develop Life-Long Skills
Camps provide the proper instruction, equipment and facilities for kids to enhance their sports abilities, their artistic talents, and their adventure skills. The sheer variety of activities offered at camp, makes it easy for kids to discover and develop what they like to do. Camp helps kids expand on their abilities.
10. Camp Builds a Lifetime of Memories
Many parents find that their children come away from camp with memories that will last a lifetime. Imagine enjoying the Summer with a lake-front experience, trying new things, and meeting new friends. Camp provides a time of discovery and self-improvement that stays with children long into adulthood.
Summer camp IS great! It is such a needed break from the academic year where creativity, adventure, thrills, smiles, and plain good times are the priority! Children will have the time of their lives...
