When there's a heat alert in Southern Ontario with temperatures over 30 degrees, it's important to keep your kids cool. Avoid heat related injuries with the following tips. Infants and young children are in the high risk group during hot weather conditions.
How to keep your kids cool and avoid heat related injuries...
• Stay hydrated by drinking lots of cool water.
• Go to an air conditioned place.
• Wear loose light coloured breathable clothing and sunscreen.
• When outdoors wear a wide-brimmed hat.
• Take cool showers or baths or use cool wet towels to cool down.
• Never leave kids or pets inside a parked car, not even with the windows open.
• Avoid the sun and stay in the shade or use an umbrella.
During an extreme heat alert, consider rescheduling outdoor activities or plan them during the cooler parts of the day.
Learn the symptoms and signs of heat-related illnesses/conditions such as heat stroke, exhaustion, cramps, and severe sunburn. If children show these symptoms, seek medical assistance immediately. Get the list from the Canadian Red Cross.
